Elefsina Project

2022 / Concept / Research

In 2023 Elefsina, once the centre of the ancient cult of Demeter and now a small rural industrial town 30 kilometres from Athens, will be celebrated as European Capital of Culture. Following in the footsteps of Greek filmmaker Filippos Koutsaftis, I came to Elefsina in 2022 for a first research trip in preparation for a work for 2023. The work has not yet been realised.

Since Documenta 14, which took place in Athens and Kassel, I have built up an intensive relationship with the Greek art scene in Athens. At the end of 2019, I therefore joined the Athens workshop collective Sektor30, which was founded by artists. In 2023, the Greek industrial city of Elefsina will be the European Capital of Culture. The Sektor30 workshop community was invited by the Capital of Culture organising team to open a presence in the city to produce and show art in exchange with local residents. Elefsina was an important centre of mysticism in antiquity, but today it is an industrial city that is undergoing profound structural change. My research will be documented in the form of texts, visual documents and film material and should ideally result in a final artistic work.
